There was a poker tournament in Dallas last night, the La Riata. A friend of a friend finished in first place and earned a $10,000 seat in the 2005 World Series of Poker.
I mean shit, there were 306 entrants competing for a single prize — the winner got a seat at the WSOP. I played very well, got lucky once, and then made a very questionable play, and finished 30th. Not bad … but sent me home with the exact same thing as the guy who went out 305th.
However … when it came down to it, we actually placed two Batfaces at the final table. Zach B. (son of Hong Kong Sue) and Shane. By the time it was down to two players, both still remained. And when Shane held KK when Zach went all-in on a flop of A-7-8 … the kings held up and Shane was the (fucking) victor! That’s right … Pokerati’s own Shane Keller just won himself a seat to the World Series of Frickin’ Poker. Awesome.
I was invited, but couldn’t afford the buy-in. Which is really good, because now I can hang on to my “there but for the grace of God go I” fantasies instead of having to live with the harsh reality of finishing three-hundred-and-somethingth out of 306.
