Observations for a Saturday morning in January

There are few things in life more disconcerting than when your dog has a nightmare and wakes up screaming.

Desperate poverty does wonderful things to simplify one’s life. Do I need to go to the Home Depot today? No. Do I need to buy new tires? No. Shall I go grocery shopping? No. Easy.

It’s maddening to realize that some of the best writing you’ve done all week can be found in private e-mails to business partners.

Alan Alda has a great laugh.

White rice is boring. It’s better with a little salt and a pat of butter. The addition of garlic powder, onion powder, curry powder, chili powder and red pepper flakes elevate it to something quite tasty. Is it any wonder that once spices were the most valuable commodities we had?

Sarah McLachlan sure can sing.
