I have managed to secure a couple of gigs of uncompressed high-definition footage transferred from 35 mm film. I’m downloading it from my friend the fancy-schmancy Hollywood producer now; obviously I won’t have time to do anything with it tonight — I’ve got to start working on my weekly “Survivor” column in 42 minutes — but tomorrow I’m going to be creating some encodings at standard-definition and half-HD resolutions to see how H.264 holds up against footage that hasn’t been previously compressed.
