The Shape of Days

A whimsical assortment of things that totally jack my shit

Blog

My politics are complicated. If you didn’t know me and you picked a topic at random on which to solicit my opinion, you might come away thinking that I’m a Republican or a Democrat, a totalitarian fascist or a communist anarchist. I’m all over the map, man.

But if you average it all out, I think generally I fit in better with the conservatives than I do with the liberals. Mostly. In general.

But crap like this, man, makes me so mad I want to just write off the conservative political movement entirely.

I really don’t care what your opinion of homosexuality is. Love it, hate it, tolerate it, ignore it, whatever. I really don’t care. But standing up in front of a crowd of people, invoking the name of God Almighty and spitting out the word “faggot” is not the right way to express yourself. Ever.

The only bright spot in all of this is the fact that Bishop Wellington “I’m a giant dumbass” Boone audibly loses the support of the crowd the instant that word crosses his lips. You can hear it on the audio. Don’t just go by the transcript; listen to the audio and hear the murmur that passes over the crowd when he gets to that part of his speech. And hear the uncertainty in his voice as he tries to apologize for saying something that I think even he realized was utterly inappropriate.

But it wasn’t enough. That dumbass — no matter how virtuous his intentions might have been — should have been booed off the damn stage.

  1. Doesn’t it seem like the more things change, the more things stay the same? The elections are coming up and each day the intensity of the finger-pointing and “nyah-nyah-nyah”-ness of it gets worse.

We have to get rid of the two-party system. I propose that all political positions are filled by lot. Like jury duty. One day you get a piece of mail that says “Congratulations! You are the next Senator from _____.” You serve your one term and that’s it. No worries about term limits. No worries about re-election campaigns or even campaigns at all. Sure, you’d get the occasional nitwit (none of those in Washington now, eh?)….but you’d also have a truly representative slice of America. And not more career politicians.

    Discuss.

  2. who the f*ck is Bishop Boone and when did he get elected Teh Poster Boy of “conservatism”?

BTW… the God/f*ggot linking? Definitely a violation of the commandment not to take the Lord’s name in vain (ie doing wrong things while invoking the name of God)

  4. We’re not getting any closer to each other, we’re just letting our parties polarize us further and further apart.

  5. If only there were some place where could focus on changing our parties…

  6. The first step in getting rid of the two-party system is to prohibit the listing of the party name/symbol adjacent to the candidate’s name on the ballots/voting machines.

Some people would not know which candidate to vote for without a donkey, chicken or elephant (I added the word elephant in order to not be too explicit.) next to their name.
